Hey everyone,

This list is for keeping track of all the films you have seen in 2000. Whenever you see a new film, simply open up your post again by the edit (notepad with pen), insert your film and rating, and delete the previous [This message has been edited....] to keep those down.

I think this would work to keep track of what we have seen and refer back to it when need be.

Please no discussion whatsoever in this forum. I will delete any posts that do so. This thread is for list only.

Thanks, and my list will soon follow!

Jason

Well every one, I am not going to name all the mvoies that I saw this past year since that will take forever and I can't even remember all of them but I will mention my top 5.

1.Cast Away
This movie was by far the directing and acting combonation masterpeice of the year, or I guess I could say of the millenium to date. Hanks was superb in this role as a stranded man who has many adventures in solitude on a deserted island and as man who retunrs to his home in the 'real world'. The scenes in this movie are terrific, especially the entire crashing of the plane montage which pretty much blew away everything else this year. Hanks should be up for best actor and it would be a crime for him to be denied. Zemeckis is really in tune with him and although I think best director isn't quite in line for him, I would expect a nomination.

2. Almost Famous
This lost out to Cast Away by a hair. This story of a young boy who found himself in a man's world while following a band after getting a job with rolling stone. This is the coming of age story which we lost in the 80's and may finally have returned to us. It is reminiscent of the breakfast club as how young people who are considered niave in the ways of the world are still responsible for them. Cameron Crowe should win best director and possibly screenplay for this work. Not to mention the story of Penny lane is one which also shown in the movie almost overshadowing the one set by Crowe. We have our best supporting actress right there, hands down. I disagree with many other reviewers on the performance of other actors in this movie which are mentionable but not awards worthy. Terrific movie and will be one that you will hear about in future film classes.

3. The Way of the Gun
This movie left me spellbound when I went out of the theatre. I paused, thought a while, and then turned around and bought another ticket to see it again that minute. This movie is fascinating as well as interesting. The fact that the two main characters who were excellently played by Phillipe and Del Toro we on screen together for almost 40% of the movie and had no more than about 15 lines of dialouge with each other. Juliett Lewis was a big let down but the writing in this mvoie is what shines as well as having the most realistic and SMART chase scene possibly of all time. The intelligence giving to our two anti-heros is what makes this shine, they are always thinking and circumventing problems that would have posed a real threat. The camera shots in this were terrific but there is something I can't put my finger on which makes me reluctant to overly praise the director, he seems to have stepped down his talent from the Usual Suspects but the writing brings him through.

4.American Psycho
Christian Bale returns from a long pause in his career from major motion pictures and comes through with colors. I read this book before I watched the mvoie and I must say that although the book is superior, the movie is not far behind. The movie left little explained at the end of this suprisingly controversal film which delved into the mind of a man obviously disturbed yet showed no pattern of obsession. One could say its lack of form is what gave it a wonderful shape. Bale should be nominated for best performance while the rest of the cast was just there to cater to our "psycho's" hungers. The best thing about the movie which seems to be a trend in this years film is the writing. Bale definitly puts on an amazing show but the character which he plays is one of a new mold which I can't really find in any other film, the only one that I can see that may be close is the one from Texas Chainsaw Massacre, but the refined nature of the character still seperates them. More of a Hannibal lecture with higher state of whims. Terrific movie.

5. Gladiator
This movie was at first on my list of movies which were overhyped but on the second viewing I began to see value. The character of Maximus was completely underdone in my frist viewing which lead me to give it a lower rating then it deserved. I still believe that Maximus, played by Crow, was not in tune enough with the rest of the movie. The character was powerful and we admired but his motivation all through the movie varied, he fought only for petty vengeance which wasn't even backed by rage at times. The frustrating thing about Crow's performance, which I did admire in some senses, was that he was acting in a way that he was trying to impress and not be the character. The acting for this movie goes to one man, Joaquin Phoniex. This is the best supporting oscaer winner, don't even waste time and just give it to him now. The actor who once thought that he would not be up to par with the rest of the cast surpassed them in his first two scenes. The action sequences in the movie were breathtaking. The shakey camera holding also used in Kubrick Any Given Sunday really made you feel the pounding and virility of the moment. The movie was incredible moving and inspiring and left you want more at the end. The fallne hero is one that always touches a deep part of us.

Thats my film list. Sorry it took so long to come out but hey, better late than never.

Fully updated 1/17/01, with a very interesting update: a power outage during a screening of "O Brother Where Art Thou" in Vancouver. Will be adding rating 1/18/01.
